Biodynamic &
Organic Agriculture
"The farmers of Egypt work in the main direction of sustainable agriculture, with biodynamic or organic methods."
Why It Matters
28% Employment
Agriculture provides livelihoods for a significant portion of the population.
4% Arable Land
Egypt's limited fertile land necessitates highly sustainable practices.
Soil Depletion
Conventional farming severely degrades soil health over time.
Environmental Benefits
Organic methods restore biodiversity, improve water retention, and sequester carbon.
<2% Current Share
Massive opportunity for mainstreaming organic practices nationwide.
"SEKEM and HU developed the agriculture model of the future, which is being disseminated in Egypt."
Our Goal 2027
Our Approach
Biological Pest Control
Heliopolis University (HU) leads research in biological pest control, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides and promoting natural ecosystem balance.
Strategic Partnerships
Cooperation with Demeter and Organic Egypt, alongside nationwide work through EBDA (Egyptian Biodynamic Association) to establish robust standards.
Financial Incentives
The BMZ-funded 'Organic Egypt' project and Economy of Love (EoL) carbon credits provide crucial financial support for farmers transitioning to organic methods.

EBDA farmer network in 2024
12,000+ farmers trained this year through extensive EBDA programs on organic conversion, crop production & sustainable farming techniques.
Total compost usage on SEKEM farms
Compost used at SEKEM farms slightly decreased compared to the previous year — driven by reduced application rates on previously reclaimed land at the Wahat farm where soil fertility has improved over time, and by increased cultivation of leguminous crops (beans, alfalfa/clover) whose natural nitrogen fixation reduces supplemental compost need.
